COLOMBO HIGHLIGHTS WITH GANGARAMAYA TEMPLE

Pick-up passengers from Pier and do a city tour of Colombo combine around the main sights of Colombo with a visit to Gangayama Buddhist Temple and the Independence Square.

 

Colombo like many capital cities in developing countries is fast changing its face. Almost overnight, skyscrapers arise from where old buildings once stood.  Yet in some parts, the Old-World charm is retained.  For example, there is a 100-year-old clock tower and several British built, colonial buildings.  Other places of interest are, the Pettah Bazaar, Hindu and Buddhist temples, Residential areas where you find the stately homes of the affluent, the Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Hall – an outright gift to Sri Lanka from the People’s Republic of China, the Old parliament in Fort, University of Colombo, Royal College, which is probably one of the largest schools in Asia with 7500 students and the Independence Square.

Drive past 100-year-old clock tower, several British built, colonial buildings and the colourful bazaar of the Pettah. Continuing on through the Fort area, which houses the Government and Mercantile Offices, you’ll notice the buildings are newer. Drive around Cinnamon Gardens where the stately homes of the affluent, various embassies and high commissions, the Bandaranayake Memorial International Conference Hall &University of Colombo.

Later a short stop will be made at Independence Square where most of the religious and national celebrations take place. You will visit the Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple.  On completion, return to the pier.

TIMED ITINERARY

0900 Hrs          Depart Pier & drive past Clock Tower, Pettah, Red Muslim Mosque, Fort, President House (from far), Town Hall,Nelum Pokuna Theatre & the Portuguese Dutch and British colonial buildings.

1000 Hrs          Arrive at Independence Square & be at leisure or walk around approx. for 20

minutes at Independence Square

1020 Hrs          Depart to Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple.

1030 Hrs          Arrive & visit Gangaramaya Buddhist Temple.

1100 Hrs          Transfer to port gate no 03

1130 Hrs            Drop the guests at  port gate no 03 to start the market.g tour –local market

                          Walk through or / and passing following ;                                        

                          Red mosque

                          Vegetable market

                          Fruit market

                          Visit colonial buildings in Fort area   

1245 Hrs           Re-board the coach                                               

1300 Hrs          Arrive at the Pier at Colombo Port.

 

Notes:

Proper attire is required to visit the sacred sites. Tank Tops, Shorts and short skirts are not allowed. Ladies should have their shoulders covered. Shoes and hats should be removed prior to entering the temples. We suggest bringing along a pair of thick socks because the pavement could be hot. Sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and temple socks are recommended.
Footwear and headwear should be removed, when entering a Temple. It is suggested to wear a pair of thick socks, as the open floor areas of the Temple could be warm due to high temperatures.
This tour involves walking on varied surfaces, flat, gravel, sandy and uneven ground, paved & tarred paths, steps to climb. As such, this excursion is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. Generally, the pettah bazaar area could be congested & crowded.  
All valuables are to be taken care on your own, while you are on tour & during the free time in the city or in a site.
